Outrageous case of spiteful Qatar border control who detained a man over a mannequin then lied to the US government resulting in his visa being cancelled. This comes after a Scottish man was put on Interpol and locked up over a herb grinder. Passengers are being warned not to transit through Doha.
Every test was negative and Qatar's own prosecution found no crime. Yet Gideon Ezeh was detained in Doha for six weeks, and a false drug record is still keeping him and his wife apart. All of this over a mannequin head.
A Nigerian data analyst who bought a mannequin head to learn to braid, as a gesture of love for his wife, was detained in Qatar for six weeks after airport officers falsely recorded styrofoam packing pebbles as cocaine, despite every test coming back negative. More than a year after Qatar’s prosecution cleared him, he and his wife remain separated and both of their US visas remain revoked.
After months apart, Gideon Ezeh was flying to see his wife, a doctoral student in a demanding Chemistry PhD programme in the United States. He was travelling from Nigeria to Dallas via Doha in May 2025 to support her through her qualifying exams but his trip became the source of enormous stress for the couple.
“We are a young family, working hard to make a life for ourselves, including at the cost of a long-distance relationship and marriage,” his wife stated.
At Doha’s international airport, officers searched Gideon, opened his baggage and found a mannequin head. The head contained polystyrene packing materials: styrofoam pebbles. Despite being a common material, authorities treated them as suspicious and tested them for drugs. Every test came back negative. Chemical swabs, machine analysis, two luggage searches and a strip search - all came back clear. Gideon says one officer even tasted the pebbles, and a jeweller confirmed they were worthless. Gideon said officers told him, “Nigerians, too much problems” and that he was locked away anyway. He says he was told more tests were needed. Instead, he says, a report was written behind his back claiming he had been caught with cocaine, and he was made to sign documents in Arabic he could not read.
Why was a traveller detained after every test came back negative?
“The whole detention, despite negative field tests, was predicated on profiling,” his wife said, adding that the bias “followed every other treatment he received.”
He was detained at the airport on 7 May 2025. By 8 May, barely 24 hours later, Gideon had been arrested and a Qatari seizure record outrageously described the styrofoam pebbles as “cocaine weighing approximately (684.10) grams.” Qatar authorities, for no legitimate law enforcement reason, relayed false information to the United States. US visa action was taken against both Gideon and his wife that same day.
Gideon was taken first to a windowless transit cell and then to the notorious Duhail detention prison, where he was held for six weeks without charge. The family says the conditions were inhumane and included overcrowding and excessive exposure to passive smoke. His phone, passport and other belongings were taken and logged by the authorities. Authorities did not inform his wife he had been detained.
The state forensic laboratory then confirmed there were no narcotics, and Gideon was finally released on 19 June 2025. He says he was released at midnight into an unfamiliar city, with no money and no apology. Four days later, on 23 June, Qatar’s Head of Drugs Prosecution issued an “Order of no criminal prosecution due to lack of a crime,” directing that the decision be communicated to all concerned parties. The family says it has still not been given the forensic laboratory report.
Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Doha and founder of Due Process International, said:
“Gideon appears to have been targeted because he was travelling alone to the States. The fact that Qatar authorities informed the US that they had detained a drugs passenger was not only a lie, but highly consequential for anyone wrongfully accused by airport staff. Gulf states have a history of race based targeting and general disrespect towards Africans and Asians ethnicities, regardless of their passport. The effect of this prejudice can be life changing. It appears Qatar security staff were looking for kudos from the United States at the expense of an innocent passenger.”
The false record remains uncorrected. The couple says April 2026 correspondence from the US Embassy confirmed that the visa revocations arose from the Qatar airport incident, on drug-related grounds. The couple had asked the embassy to reconsider on 31 March 2026. His wife, who was not at the airport and had no involvement in the airport incident, lost her US visa too, and her doctoral progress has been in jeopardy ever since.
While Gideon was in detention, Qatar Airways banned him for “unacceptable conduct” on 20 May 2025 but subsequently lifted the ban, and later expressed regret for having acted on government directives and assuming it to be true. Qatar Airways said it had not intended to imply that Gideon had committed unacceptable conduct. The ban was imposed before any laboratory result existed and was not lifted until more than five months after his release, with the reinstatement letter still referring to “unacceptable conduct.”
The Nigerian Embassy wrote to Qatar twice seeking redress after his release. More than a year later, there has been no response. The Nigerian Embassy in Doha also wrote to the US Embassy in Abuja in December 2025 in support of Gideon.
“Why is Qatar ignoring a whole government?” Gideon pleaded.
“The Nigerian Embassy has sought answers on behalf of its citizens, and those requests cannot simply be ignored,” Stirling said. “Qatar’s own prosecution directed that its decision be communicated to concerned parties. That includes formal communications to the US State Department and their immigration and security counterparts. Any black mark against his name will follow him throughout the rest of his life. It’s this kind of reckless behaviour that saw Australia in a diplomatic incident over Qatar’s abusive treatment of female passengers transiting through Doha. Qatar’s airport policies are a danger to passengers using it as a transport hub”.
“This was supposed to be a husband arriving to support his wife through an important stage of her education,” Stirling said. “Instead, their marriage, her studies and their plans have all been affected. The prosecution found there was no crime. That finding has to mean something beyond a piece of paper.
“In another similar case, we assisted Conor Howard from Scotland, who was questioned in Doha over a shop-bought brand new herb grinder. Authorities cleared him and let him continue his journey. Conor thought nothing more of the issue but a year later when on a family holiday, he was arrested in Greece and held in jail for four months because Qatar had wrongfully issued an Interpol Red Notice. This kind of recklessness causes visa cancellations, permanent security flags, and lengthy detention in gruelling conditions. Innocent passengers are at serious risk.
“An airport blunder in Qatar can follow a traveller across borders, and being cleared does not undo the damage once the information has gone abroad. Transit passengers need to understand that a brief stopover can end in detention and a record that outlasts the case.”
“We are a regular, hardworking family that didn’t deserve such profiling in the first place,” his wife said. “Neither do we deserve the continued harm that Qatar’s refusal to right the wrongs keeps exerting.”
Stirling warned: “Tourists and transit passengers should understand that even a brief stopover in Qatar can have serious consequences. You do not have to have committed a crime for an allegation to lead to detention, visa revocations or an INTERPOL notice that puts you at risk of arrest elsewhere. Being cleared in Qatar does not necessarily undo the damage once that allegation has been circulated abroad.”
Due Process International is calling on Qatar to release the full laboratory report, answer the Nigerian Embassy’s requests for redress and formally correct the record with every agency that received the original accusation. It is also urging the US authorities to review both visa revocations in light of the prosecution’s finding that there was no crime.
Gideon and his wife should not remain separated by Qatar’s false allegation.
